Why Denim Layering Is Perfect for Spring
Denim layering is ideal for navigating transitional seasons. The layers are enough to handle chilly mornings, but not so heavy to leave you sweating in the sun. Despite being lighter than a coat, denim fabric still exudes a utilitarian sense of heft that benefits from styling that breaks up the heaviness of the fabric. Our favorite denim on denim offsets include intentional layering, contrast accessories and this year’s most prominent trend; Cinching and Cinched Silhouettes.

11 Styling Tips for Mastering Denim on Denim Fashion
Cinched Silhouettes and Belting
This year’s biggest double denim trend is keeping your jacket cinched with a roomy pant or skirt.
Opt for a longline cinched jacket that’s nipped at the waist, or belt it with a leather or all-denim belt.
Tucked in Denim Shirts with Jeans
Tuck your denim shirt in (front tuck or all the way). Belt it and pair with a matching bag and heel, flat or sandal. This look works great with flair, trouser, straight leg and wide leg jeans.
Oversized Denim Shirt with Jeans
Wear your denim shirts out and oversized, breaking up the look by leaving the last few buttons undone.
Other ways to keep your outfit from looking too heavy is to opt for shape-defining flare jeans, pointed heels and top layers like a blazer or tied sweater.
Alternative Monochromes, Going Beyond Blue
Match monochromatic denim pieces in alternative colors like charcoal black, baby pink and ivory.
Contrast Denim
Mismatch your denim by pairing light and dark washes, or mixing in ivory or washed black denim.
Accessorizing Denim with Texture
Accessorizing with texture helps break up the hefty nature of denim! Silk scarves, layered jewelry, suede or leather shoes/bags, textural fur and animal/snake print are all great options.
Denim Layering: Breaking up the Denim on Denim
Break up your denim with non-denim! Knits, tees, turtlenecks, shirtings and vests can add flattering space between denim layers.
Date Outfit Idea: The Denim Skirt
Denim midi and maxi skirts look great with trending longline cinched denim jackets and tucked in denim shirts. Pair the look with boots or heels for work or date night.
A Sweeping Top Layer, Denim Trench Coats
Denim Trenches can be belted or unbelted for a sweeping statement silhouette that looks great for casual/creative work settings and chic days out.
Denim Vests, Trophy Tops and Corsets
A sexy denim top paired head to toe with a jean jacket and skirt or pants is great for date night and outings with friends.
Denim Coords for Easy Denim on Denim Pairing
Denim coords make for an easy way to hop into the denim on denim trend, taking out the guess work of what to pair with what.
